'Submerged - Takaka River' by Rebekah Hall
Watercolour, Chalk, Pen on Paper
Size: 50 x 39cm - beautifully framed
Artist Statement:
Part of Rebekah’s research into an object is to look at it often at a micro level, up close and personal often. Drawing and painting become a vehicle to really see and understand a subject that has piqued her interest prior to making in clay. These studies often become works in their own right.
Here “sketches” give the viewer a chance to connect with the inspiration that informs her work and hopefully join her in a shared story of place.
'Fields (I) - Clevedon' by Megan Murphy (SOLD)
Hand-drawn clay tile
Size: 18.5 x 13cm
Artist Statement:
Every time I drive out to the countryside, it gives me pause.
A time to take a breath and gather my equilibrium.
A time to come back to self.
I was brought up on a poultry farm in Weymouth, so travelling out to the beautiful country areas of Aotearoa takes me back to the love I had for the green hills, fields and farm animals, with so much life all around. I used to love trekking over the hills gathering seasonal mushrooms and blackberries and imagining all sorts of worlds from playing in the old barns that were scattered around.
The act of creating these hand-drawn clay tiles has also given me a reason to pause. A time to sit and record these moments of peace and rest. To take time out from life’s challenges and just be with the pencils, to make fresh new marks on to the clay. Unbeknown to me, until I embarked on this series, is the belief that the colour green is a healing colour. Perhaps unconsciously, spending time working on these artworks was what I needed right now, to help me heal.
I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I have enjoyed creating them. f you would like to see more of my work I have done over the years, look at my website: meganmurphy.co.nz
'Study No. 2' by Greta Umbers
Graphite on Board
Size: 20 x 15cm
Artist Statement:
Environment and weather patterns often emerge in my drawings, a result of being both inspired by and connected to the land. They are simultaneously traditional landscapes, and pyschogeographical reflections from the rural areas that feed our cities.
The cow lying down awaiting the arrival of the rain, the drying streambed and trough are static moments of relative calm between drought and flood. They are moments of reflection and anticipation - hope for renewal, or dread of catastrophe.
These sketches were experimental studies for a new body of work I am currently developing which is similar in form, however differs in content from these familiar pastoral scenes.
The new challenges and unpredictable outcomes I encountered when shifting from working on paper to gessoed board made these studies not only necessary and informative but is also an integral step in the development of my artistic process.
'Kiwi' by Sandra Whyte (SOLD)
Oil on Linen
Size: 58 x 43cm
Artist Statement:
Sometimes a painting just seems to land on the canvas, as if it were painted through me rather than by me. Then there's the rest. The ones I push and pull around the surface until a half decent job is done or I finally crack the secret ingredient.
Sketching has become my new best friend. I sit with my charcoals and imagine the possibilities. A dusting here for atmosphere, the swipe of the eraser where refinement is due and a heavy hand for values of dark, like a stamp of approval unable to remove.
Problems are solved and mind put to rest, now just for colour - it passes the test.
'Te Reo' by Bernie Winkels (HOLD)
Acrylic on Card
Size: 36 x 30cm
Artist Statement:
“These works have been created from my own feelings and other people’s reactions in contrast to some of the latest political current affairs”.
'Kelp IV' by Andrea Ventling (SOLD)
Size: 70 x 50cm
Inks, watercolour, paper on board
Artist Statement:
In my art practice I am interested in finding ways to convey movement and light.
Sketching is a tool for me where I can experiment and test possibilities within composition, colours, materials and techniques and how far I can take these.
Every sketch is an experience while making it but also an experience gained through discoveries. A sketch is not like a finished and planned artwork. It often has surprising and new elements, happens spontaneously and can lead to interesting accidental marks.
'Journey 19' by Dalene Meiring (SOLD)
Gorgeous small works by Dalene.
Oil on wood block tiles
Size: 12 x 12 x 6cm
'Portugal' by Lizzy Dickie
Pen sketch on Chart - beautifully framed in black
Size: 53 x 43cm - framed
'Transfer' by Rick Allender
Contemporary Marquetry: Kauri, Maple, Pine, Teak, Rimu, Paper
Size: 60 x 32cm
Artist Statement:
‘Transfer’ is a contemporary marquetry work that represents how a drawing can transition into marquetry art.
During the design process, various image outlines are reproduced using transfer paper. This paper is reused for other work transpositions creating a layered sequence. The resulting pattern is inlaid and glazed creating a flush surface within the marquetry frame. The rest of the work minimally describes sections of those previous transcriptions onto the new veneer composition.
Transfer uses Kauri, Birdseye Maple, Hoop Pine, Teak, Rimu and Pearwood wood veneers, transfer paper and resin on a composite board.

'Evolution of Dinkie #1' by Ema Frost
Gouache, Graphite, ink on paper
Size: 38 x 31cm -framed
Artist Statement:
Here is the evolution of Dinkie... first he starts with two small ears, then next one grows then by the third piece he has come to completion. I really love the subtleness of this work, emanating a serene peaceful feel, while also being quietly determined and ambitious.
There's a cute little story that came about with these pieces, which you'll notice each feature a Japanese symbol/character. I stayed with my mum in California before heading off to London on my big OE. Upon arrival in London, with bags packed to the brim I opened up my case and Mum had sneaked in this beautiful necklace that I'd seen prior to leaving the States. The necklace is silver and has the Japanese symbol/character for Ambition stamped in the middle. It was such a nice surprise and I've worn the necklace ever since. I find it inspiring, and it's only fitting that it features on the Evolution of Dinkie series xx

'Underwater Galaxy' by Andrea Ventling
Watercolour, inks on paper - concertina booklet incorporating underwater imagery and poetry.
Artist Statement:
A concertina booklet telling the story of a dive, going down through the water column encountering glistening fish, being bathed in light, going further seeing seaweed with fish swimming past and hiding in it, going even deeper and finding red corals in a rocky overhang. Finally coming up to air and sunlight again being followed by more schooling little fish.
I have just started doing this kind of painting to process memories and weaving in imagination.
In my art practice I am interested in finding ways to convey movement and light.
