ABOUT BARI DUNCAN
Bari’s start to art was from a very young age – with colouring books at the age of around 3 years old. Her mother could not keep up with the demand as Bari created masterpiece after masterpiece and the colouring books piled high – happily occupied for hours on end. From there she moved onto sketching her Aunties and Uncles at family occasions. There was a constant call for “Bari to please do a sketch of Uncle Brian”, to which she would gladly oblige.
With around 30 years of painting experience - initially in pastels, Bari worked for10 years in acrylics before moving onto her now preferred medium - oils. She admits she was initially ‘afraid’ of oils and was not actually sure where the fear came from, but we are very glad she overcame it as Bari is now one of New Zealand’s top seascape artists. |
Born and bred in the Hawkes Bay, Bari has a great love of the local sea and landscapes. Living close to the ocean it is an intrinsic part of her everyday life and she cannot imagine living where she could not see, photograph and paint the ocean. Though she admits with a laugh, that she does not actually like being in or on it.
In past years Bari has had many successful local, national, solo and joint exhibitions, and has commissioned works worldwide. She has been published several times in the New Zealand and Australian Artists magazine and the International Artists magazine and has a very strong following both in New Zealand and Australia. She has also taught others – generously facilitating them in their art with techniques she took years to perfect herself.
With no formal training, purely a strong connection to the land and sea, Bari is totally self-taught, and believes she improves with each painting produced; “It is a constant learning journey with a long exciting road ahead”.
Bari's ability to capture the ocean - the curl and ragged tip of a wave, the break, the foam as it rolls toward the shore - is second to none. Her love of the ocean shows beautifully in every piece.
These works are ones you would sit and gaze at, just as you do the ocean.
