ABOUT EMA FROST
Ema Frost is an Auckland based graphic artist, illustrator and ceramic designer who is greatly influenced by her travels, most especially by Japan and the Japanese culture.
Ema produces wonderful porcelain creatures that - whilst made from ceramic, have such a soft and inviting quality as to make them so vastly popular. Beautiful soft colours, rounded edges, whimsical shapes of adorable animals that resound so nostalgically to the child within.
Ema's wonderful ceramics are created without eyes. Ema explains that in Japanese culture, a doll called a DARUMA is given to motivate goal setting and perseverance, yet it has no eyes as it is for the recipient to add them. "You hold the Daruma in one hand and visualize your goal, then apply one eye. Once you have reached your goal, you add the other eye".
Ema's works are predominantly of animals and are created in a very fine porcelain with a beautiful gloss finish, crafted in wonderful colours.
These are pieces that have wide appeal - given as gifts for a new baby, to children as special keepsakes and to adults - appealing to the child within.
They are quite simply - lovely, elegant, classic pieces.
"When I was a kid I discovered that you don't choose art, art chooses you".
For Ema, art is a form of expression and a way of life.
