John Boyd-Dunlop
ABOUT JOHN BOYD-DUNLOP
I first met John when I went down to Napier to meet with the Quay Gallery artists. We hit it off immediately, mostly – I think, because I instantly felt a connection to his work and therefore – to him.
John is a wildly creative person who produces works of such incredible vibrance that we would have to call them ‘Fantastical’! His work challenges the imagination, because – to be honest, few people could keep up with his! John refers to Pareidolia when discussing his artistic style. The tendency for inaccurate perception of say – an object, pattern or meaning, such as seeing shapes in clouds, finding faces in objects or abstract patterns, or hearing hidden messages in music. John brings this style to life in each of his wonderful pieces. Letting loose an incredibly artistic ability to bring fantasy to life, blending colours that would normally clash violently together in such a way as to be truly intriguing, in that few people would even attempt let alone achieve this. |
And yes - there is boobs, and quite lovely round bottoms. Lovely people in lively poses. Gorgeous gardens and colorful fowls – elegance, vivacity, flow. All of this and more.
John’s ‘subconscious influences’ are the indigenous cultures – Aztec, Mexican, Mayan. “If I like it, I will paint it. I paint for myself, but I always strive to make this one better than the last”. He started with doodling on paper and canvas and you can see this evident in all of his works – actually, as the basis for them. He told me the hardest thing is to put the first line on the paper. After that, it just flows and becomes something – well, Fantastical!

From a horticultural background, John draws from memory - of plants and flowers and beautiful things that have influenced his love of color. His family was incremental in the development of the Japanese Gif Melon in New Zealand – a background that makes sense when you look at his body of work.
John's work is clever, quirky, it makes you smile. And the colors, colours – oh the colours! We so completely admire John's works as pieces to live with, to love and enjoy – every day.
