ABOUT RICK ALLENDER
Rick Allender is a New Zealand born cinematographer and established marquetry artist living in Auckland.
Rick’s working life started at a film studio in Sydney where he saw his career evolve through driving, editing assistant and camera assistant. He worked on many New Zealand features from the 1980’s onwards and his cinematographer and camera operating credits include features, documentaries, TV series, and commercials.
Rick eventually felt the draw of Kiwi life and after 22 years in Sydney, moved to Taranaki to ‘live on the land’ – running 60 acres of bush and pasture with cows, horses and goats. He now lives in Auckland where his artistic interests are focused on conceptualising and crafting contemporary marquetry and collage using wood veneer combined with other materials. His experience as a cinematographer informs his artistic approach to interpretation, organisation, composition, texture and lighting.

With this work there is a precision required, an attention to detail that ensures not only the integrity of each piece but the quality of the design.
Rick explores unusual combinations of materials - bringing together the inherent beauty of different types of wood with paint and delicate Japanese handmade paper - sourced personally on a trip to Japan. Each piece is precisely placed and accentuated with elegant and simple design that celebrates the materials used.
His process is an interesting one, using techniques he has studied and learnt from a variety of sources. For the finishing coats he uses epoxy resin and clear artist varnishes to achieve a pristine and enduring finish. He seeks to pay respect to the beauty of material and design, maintaining the quality of each piece right through to making the contemporary aluminum framing which accentuates much of his work.
This is wall art of exceptional quality and design, unique and unusual work that will find a rightful place in any home.
