Don Packwood
ABOUT DON PACKWOOD
Don Packwood is an internationally recognised and highly respected artist who has painted in oils from age 8 years. Though widely known for his motorsport and automotive subject painting, he has a highly developed style that has led to private commissions by automotive enthusiasts and collectors such as Bruce McLaren Trust, Karting NZ and Possum Borne Trust.
Don initially wanted to become a marine artist, but was discouraged from this path by a gallery who at that time, told him that marine art would not sell in New Zealand. Despite this, his imagination was fired when he became involved with Sir Peter Blake and the 1995 Americas Cup. Don painted a series of twelve paintings – “Sir Peter Blake – A Portrait in Oil”, and worked with Sir Peter to market the series. “Peter came to my house in Titirangi. I felt I had become the freelance artist that I always wanted to be. I thought ‘this is pretty cool’.” Sir Peter endorsed the series in 1999 it has since sold to collections worldwide – including UK, Canada, France. |
Don's work, although recently tailored to the automotive market, has wide appeal to those that love classic cars and enjoy art. Don brings the best of these two things together to immortalize automotive imagery in a spectacular way. Honestly, he can paint anything – extremely well. He chooses to paint what he does and is without a doubt, one of the best automotive artists in the world and his body of works are held in high esteem in international galleries and private collections.
I met Don and his wife Carol at their home in Tauranga and talked with them about the possibility of his joining Quay Gallery to offer exclusive commissions to our clients. In addition to this, Don brings to Quay Gallery a new body of work, inspired by trips abroad. Gorgeous European scenes beautifully depicted in Don's signature style.
