ABOUT JAY LLOYD
Jay Lloyd is a cast bronze sculpture artist based on Waiheke Island. He qualified as an Industrial Designer in the late 80’s at the School of Art and Design of the Witwatersrand Technikon (Now the University of Johannesburg) in South Africa.
Jay has been casting in various metals for at least 20 years starting with lead and tin alloys for the fishing product market and later pewter cutlery. He then moved to casting aluminium and built up a manufacturing business making specialised decor and bathroom fittings. The business eventually employed eight permanent staff and was sold before Jay immigrated to New Zealand. Jay established his new studio and foundry in 2010 on Waiheke Island. He now works mostly in bronze and does a variety of work from jewellery to sculpture. He regularly exhibits work on Waiheke and various galleries throughout New Zealand, taking inspiration from the immediate environment and working with simple clean lines. "Bronze holds the same allure for me as it did for all those who have worked it for centuries. I like my work to have simple clean lines and I take pride in the hand craft nature of what I do. The process is as important to me as the final product." We met Jay in the artists [ s p a c e ] art gallery on Waiheke and just love his bronze works. Simple shapes derived from land and sea that are so relatable to Kiwi life. View select pieces in the gallery. |
