Artist Statement:
Environment and weather patterns often emerge in my drawings, a result of being both inspired by and connected to the land. They are simultaneously traditional landscapes, and pyschogeographical reflections from the rural areas that feed our cities.
The cow lying down awaiting the arrival of the rain, the drying streambed and trough are static moments of relative calm between drought and flood. They are moments of reflection and anticipation - hope for renewal, or dread of catastrophe.
These sketches were experimental studies for a new body of work I am currently developing which is similar in form, however differs in content from these familiar pastoral scenes.
The new challenges and unpredictable outcomes I encountered when shifting from working on paper to gessoed board made these studies not only necessary and informative but is also an integral step in the development of my artistic process.
