Artist Statement for Group of 3 Bottles - inspired by Giorgio Morandi:
The working process often occurs in the titles of Giorgio Morandi's engravings e.g., 'Still Life in Fine Strokes' and 'Still Life in Short Slanting Strokes'. A bottle appears in many of his paintings and engravings.
I set out to discover the effect different working methods would have on a group of objects using this bottle as a study.
Solid clay was beaten and squeezed, shaped from within or without - attacked with a wooden knife or spoon or smoothed with fingers. Bases were cut to a pattern and coils of clay were used in a horizontal or vertical manner in different lengths and random sized pieces of clay were pinched together in a free manner. The bottle necks had an inbuilt twist or built straight and were twisted later. Various sizes of sewing needle and a coarse toothed glue spreader were used to 'engrave' the clay. The same clay, black strain and kiln temperature was used for all pieces.
On completion, some of the bottles had a bouncy beligerant air reminiscent of Philip Guston's paintings. I chose those which had a quiet stillness that spoke to me of Morandi.
