ABOUT MEGAN MURPHY
Megan Murphy is an local Auckland artist who works predominately in the medium of painting. She has also worked within the assemblage, conceptual art, illustration and ceramic disciplines. Megan attained a Bachelor of Visual Arts from Manukau School of Visual Arts majoring in Painting in 1998 and holds an adult teaching certificate in ceramics, clay sculpture, life drawing and general art classes. She currently runs her own art school, MEGANZ School of Visual Arts, based from her home studio in Cockle Bay.
Recently Megan has produced a series of work under the name ‘Pause’ which comprises a collection of paintings and hand-drawn ceramic tiles of scenes from the Clevedon countryside. Megan lost her youngest son in 2019. Her work stopped immediately, mid-way through a series called ‘Sand Marks’. She has not returned to this work as yet. ‘Pause’ has given her time to calm the mind in the solace of the green hills. In 2022, Megan exhibited with her daughter Greta Umbers at Railway Street Gallery in Newmarket, Auckland. ‘16:34 | 16:35’. This duo exhibition focused on ‘loss of a loved one’. Greta produced large drawings and Megan - small oil paintings. Megan has exhibited in New Zealand, Australia and sent works to the US and the UK. The ‘Arts House Trust’ acquired a work named ‘Tuppence Worth’ to add to their collection. This work has been shown in the Auckland Unitec library and at the Arts House Trust at Pah Homestead. Megan won a merit award for the NCC Art Awards for her work ‘Arte Povera’ and she sent a work to the Artist Protest Anti Sedition Laws Exhibition at the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, NSW Australia. Four Illustrations were accepted into Potroast Magazine Issue 11 and she recently produced illustrations for Alastair Shephard’s book ‘Crossing the Irrawaddy’. |
