ABOUT ANN VERDCOURT
In September 2020, I met Ann and her husband John Lawrence in their beautiful “Rose Villa” in Dannevirke and was instantly struck by how completely Ann embodies the impression one has of a true artist in only the most positive of ways. She speaks cheerfully and eloquently of her art and of her experiences in the art world. With her you feel you have been transported to another world – one in which you can freely express your own love of art in the presence of someone who truly understands.
Ann has lived and breathed art and creativity her entire life and as such, has an incredible curriculum vitae starting at just 14 years of age when she attended Luton School of Art in the UK. Her work is showcased in many permanent collections including Te Papa Museum - Wellington, the Auckland War Memorial Museum, the Auckland Museum, Te Manawa – Palmerston North, Sarjeant Art Gallery – Whanganui, the James Wallace Collection – Auckland, Hawke’s Bay Museum, and the Dowse Museum – Lower Hutt. Throughout her career Ann has explored many mediums, though pottery and ceramics have played a key role in her creative focus. Ann’s works are complex without seeming so. Her ability to construct is extraordinary and the resulting ‘simplicity’ of her pieces seeks to belie the incredible amount of time, experience and skill that has gone into them. |
We are in love with the pieces that Quay Gallery holds – “Knee” and “Group of Three Bottles”. I have held these pieces,
looked at them from every angle and in different placements. They are solid, heavy - they have ‘presence’, they are wonderful. They are also very special in that Ann is no longer producing – so they are the last of their kind.
These works are gold - they are treasure.
