"Transform" is a new exhibition of contemporary glass mounted by five artists from Northland who met whilst studing toward the Bachelor of Applied Arts degree. Members of the group have achieved critical acclaim both here and overseas and this will be their first group exhibition in Hawkes Bay.
The Lonely Hearts page of a national newspaper inspired the pate de verre vessels of Sue Hawker. Using the vessel as a metaphor she has alluded to the attributes often advertised by those seeking love. Pieces from the series were selected as finalists in the Molly Morpeth Canaday Award and the Ranamok Contemporary Glass Prize in Australia.
Donna Feary's current work focuses on environmental weeds and explores loss of habitat of native plants."Through the often overlooked and transformative beauties of the earth, a small seed, a ray of light - momentary experiences - we are stirred. I'm interested in those ineffable moments when you are moved beyond yourself to a sense of stillness and belonging."
Of particular interest to Lee Brogan has been working in pate de verre sculpture with it's potential to reflect the zen idea of "wabi sabi", (a beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent and incomplete") Lee presents "Shipwrecks" and "Bombora" ( which produced the winner of the 2008 Molly Morpeth Canaday Glass Award and a finalist in the 2008 Wallace Awards).
Jaymz Edmonds shares a home based studio in Kerikeri with his wife Gail, he has exhibited work in cast glass over the past 7 years in New Zealand and more recently Australia. Jaymz is completing the final year of a Bachelor of Applied Arts degree at Northtech. "20th century design and architecture is influencing my work at the moment."
Gail's work, exhibited in New Zealand and Australia, has featured in the 2007 and 2009 Molly Morpeth Canaday Awards. " I've always enjoyed the drama and luminosity of glass playing with the assemblage of pieces to exaggerate a theatrical and humorous quality in work. 'God be the clown, give us humour to foster a light and appreciate the absurd hilarity of life'."
